What is BitTorrent?
BitTorrent is a decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing and torrent platform that allows users to exchange files with each other instead of downloading them from a central server. It was initially conceived by Bram Cohen and became popular in the early 2000s among the music and movie communities.
In July 2018, BitTorrent was acquired by blockchain platform TRON, which added several new features to the platform, including the launch of BitTorrent token, a native cryptocurrency. BTT is a TRC-10 token that is used to incentivize users to use the platform and help solve network issues. It can be used by users to buy and spend BitTorrent tokens to request files or increase their download speed, while users who share files on their systems are rewarded with BTT.
Beyond file sharing, the team behind BitTorrent is also working on BitTorrent-related and BTT-enabled applications, such as the BitTorrent File System (BTFS), which is a decentralized file storage system that was built by forking the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) and built on Ethereum. BTFS allows users to store and share files on a decentralized network, providing a more secure and efficient alternative to traditional file storage systems.
One of the main features of the BitTorrent Token (BTT) is BitTorrent Speed, which allows users to buy BTT tokens in exchange for faster download speeds on the BitTorrent network. This provides an additional incentive for users to use the platform and contribute to the network, helping to improve its overall performance and reliability.
