As Ledger users might have noticed, when adding a Bitcoin account in Ledger Wallet you are presented with two options: a Native SegWit account and a SegWit account. While one can easily tell the difference between a Native SegWit address (starting with “bc1”) and a SegWit address (starting with “3”), we’d like to take a closer look at what this exactly means.

세그윗(P2SH) 및 네이티브 세그윗(Bech32)는 비트코인 계정을 위해 존재하는 최초 주소 형식이 아닙니다. 최초 주소 형식은 레거시(Legacy)로, 주소가 ‘1’로 시작됩니다. 비트코인 가격이 상승하기 시작하면서 각 트랜잭션에 대해 지불하는 수수료도 더 높아지는 듯 보였습니다. 사실상 트랜잭션 속도는 느린 편에 속했습니다.

그래서 세그윗이 등장했습니다.

세그윗(Segregated Witness) 제안을 놓고 그 당시 열띤 논쟁이 벌어졌습니다. SegWit2X으로 알려진 초기 제안은 사실상 사라지고 현재 우리가 세그윗이라고 알고 것으로 대체되었습니다. 2017년 8월에 세그윗을 구현한 소프트 포크가 진행되었습니다. 이후에는 빠르게 채택되어 새로운 표준이 되기 시작했습니다.

그렇다면 세그윗이 무엇을 바꿨나요?

세그윗(SegWit), 또는 Wrapped 또는 Nested SegWit이라고 불리기도 하는데, 이를 통해 트랜잭션 데이터의 크기가 줄어 들었습니다. 이는 트랜잭션으로부터 트랜잭션 서명의 특정 데이터를 분리함으로써 가능했습니다. 트랜잭션의 크기를 가볍게 함으로써 단일 비트코인 블록으로 더 많은 트랜잭션이 들어갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 이를 통해 비트코인 네트워크의 확장성이 향상되고 트랜잭션 속도는 더 빨라지게 됩니다. 더 큰 장점은 각 비트코인 트랜잭션에 대한 트랜잭션 수수료가 엄청나게 줄어든다는 것입니다. 세그윗은 또한 두 번째 계층 확장 솔루션을 활성화해 라이트닝 네트워크를 탄생시켰습니다.

세그윗 vs. 네이티브 세그윗

bech32라고도 불리는 네이티브 세그윗은 주소 형식의 최신 단계입니다. 이전 버전의 제품보다 무게 측면에서 더욱 효율적입니다. 이는 세그윗 트랜잭션보다 훨씬 더 빠른 트랜잭션 속도, 더 뛰어난 확장성 및 트랜잭션당 더 낮은 수수료를 의미합니다. 여기에다 bech32는 더 뛰어난 에러 탐지 기능을 보유하며 주소에 소문자만 사용해 가독성이 더욱 뛰어납니다. 그러한 이유 때문에 제시되는 경우 가장 인기가 좋은 옵션입니다.

The only downside of bech32 is that not every major platform supports this address format yet. While transactions between Legacy, SegWit and Native SegWit addresses are fully compatible, there are still quite a few exchanges and wallet providers that don’t support sending BTC to a bc1 address yet. As such, when you add an account on Ledger Wallet you will be presented with both the possibility of adding a Native SegWit and/or a SegWit address.
