New in Ledger Wallet™: Secure Private Transactions with Aleo
Aleo is now natively integrated into Ledger Wallet™, allowing you to manage Aleo assets, send public or private transactions, and shield your on-chain activity, backed by the security of a Ledger signer.
Before You Dive In:
- Most blockchains record every transaction permanently on a public ledger, meaning your balances, payment flows, and financial history are visible to anyone.
- Aleo solves this using zero-knowledge proofs to confirm a transaction is valid without revealing any of the details behind it, giving you a legitimate choice between public and private onchain activity.
- Ledger’s integration with Aleo brings together hardware-secured digital ownership and programmable onchain privacy together within a unified experience.
What is Aleo?
Transparency is a core element of public blockchains, with every transaction stored on a digital ledger visible to anyone. The inherent trade-off, however, is that it puts your financial activity permanently out in public.
Aleo is a privacy blockchain that’s built differently in that it gives you a choice. Transactions can be public, like any other blockchain, or they can be shielded and private, while still being cryptographically verifiable by the network. The mechanism behind this is zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs). A ZKP allows one party to prove to another that something is true, without revealing any of the underlying information.
This integration brings a seamless experience of fully shielded transactions to Ledger Wallet, allowing you to move value on-chain while keeping information on the sender, recipient, and transaction amount hidden from public view.
The optionality Aleo provides allows individual users to keep their transaction history private, and businesses to keep their financial operations confidential, all without abandoning the security or auditability that makes blockchain uniquely valuable.
Aleo is the privacy layer. Ledger is how you hold the keys to it.
Why Use Aleo via Ledger Wallet™?
Until now, you had to make a choice between ultimate privacy and hardware-backed security. This integration changes that.
Hardware-Secured Private Keys
The private keys controlling your Aleo accounts never leave your Ledger signer. They’re generated and stored in a certified Secure Element chip and never exposed to the internet.
Full Transaction Clarity
Every Aleo transaction, whether public or private, is confirmed on the secure screen of your Ledger signer. Thanks to Clear Signing, you see exactly what you are signing before you sign it.
Your Choice, Fully In Your Hands
Aleo lets you decide, per transaction, whether your activity is public or private. Ledger puts that decision under hardware control. The combination means your digital ownership is both private and provably secure.
How To Use Aleo In Ledger Wallet™
- Ensure Ledger Wallet™ desktop (version 4.2.0 or later) and your Ledger OS™ are both up to date. Aleo is currently not available on the Ledger Wallet™ mobile app.
- Open My Ledger in Ledger Wallet™, connect, and unlock your Ledger signer.
- Find Aleo in the app catalog and click Install.
- Navigate to the Accounts section, click Add account, and search for Aleo. During setup, approve the view key request — this lets Ledger Wallet™ display your private balance on screen without the ability to move funds.
- Click Send and choose whether to send from your public or private balance. Public sends work like any standard blockchain transfer. Private sends use encrypted records — select the record you want to spend and enter an amount up to its value.
- Verify the transaction details on your Ledger signer’s secure screen and confirm to sign.
