What is Storj (STORJ)

Storj is one of the leading decentralized cloud storage platforms focusing on crafting a secure, low-cost marketplace for renting excess computer storage space across a network of users.

Users retain complete sovereignty over their data, as stored data is split and distributed to participating storage devices across the network -- only a user’s private key may unlock the data. Decentralized cloud storage models are based on P2P protocols, and are more resilient to black swan outages and hacking attempts than their centralized counterparts.

Storj (STORJ) features

Storj recently rolled out Tarigrade, the production-ready version of the Storj decentralized cloud solution. The network is designed to be affordable, performant, and secure, with guaranteed SLAs. The general process flow of file storage using Storj follows the encrypt, split, and distribute model.

Users pay a fee to submit a file to the network, with the cost corresponding to the size of the file. The data file is then encrypted using client-side AES-256-GCM encryption, split into multiple fragments, then distributed to various devices across the network. Like putting back together a puzzle, only the holder of the private key may piece the fragments together and unlock the data.

Storage node operators can be anyone with spare computing or storage capacity, and are incentivized to store data fragments with payment in the native STORJ token.

In addition to the decentralized storage dynamics that behave like a market, Storj offers a partner program and services like drop-in S3 compatibility, a simple IAM, and a library for integrating with the network. Storj initially ran atop of Bitcoin’s protocol, before migrating to Ethereum.

The STORJ token is an ERC-20 token and there is a capped supply of approximately 425 million STORJ.
