New in Ledger Wallet™: Native Shielded Zcash Support

Before You Dive In:

• Managing shielded ZEC on a Ledger signer previously meant pairing your device with a separate companion wallet just to view and move private balances.
• Ledger Wallet™ Desktop now supports shielded Zcash. Previously this required a separate companion wallet. Now it doesn’t. Everything works natively in Ledger Wallet Desktop. Your private keys stay on your device.
• You can now add, send, and receive shielded ZEC from a single, secure interface, with the same security model that already protects your transparent Zcash balances.

Shielded Zcash on Ledger gives you both security and convenience: a software wallet for ease, or a hardware signer for protection, but never both at once. That compromise is no longer necessary. Shielded ZEC management is now native inside Ledger Wallet™ Desktop*, no companion wallet required.

Bringing Scale to Zcash’s Anonymity Set

Privacy is only as strong as the number of people using it. With few users, transaction patterns become easier to infer. The Zcash community has pushed for broader adoption for years, understanding that scale is what makes shielded transactions harder to trace.

Ledger secures almost 30% of BTC and more than 30% of Dollar stablecoins held by retail investors across more than 8 million signers sold. Bringing shielded ZEC natively into Ledger Wallet puts that scale behind Zcash’s anonymity set, without asking any of those signer holders to trade away security for privacy.

How Shielded ZEC Signing Works via Ledger Wallet™

Your private key stays on your Ledger signer throughout. Your computer handles the transaction math. Your device shows you what you’re signing, ready for your approval.

The 2018 Sapling upgrade made that separation possible in principle, cutting the memory a proof required from close to 3GB down to about 40MB. Turning that possibility into a working signer integration took longer, with new cryptographic curve support for Orchard’s addresses, on-device transaction parsing, and security audits all happening in the interim and landing now with Ironwood.

The result: you get shielded privacy with the same security model that already protects transparent ZEC via Ledger Wallet™. Your spending keys stay on your Ledger signer and your computer handles the transaction computation, whether you’re managing a transparent balance or a shielded one.

Decentralized Privacy You Can Still Audit

Built on Ironwood

The shielded pool now supported in Ledger Wallet™ is Ironwood, the newest addition to Zcash’s shielded pools, activated on the network in July 2026. 

Unlike many blockchains where voting is public, Zcash governance happens on shielded addresses. When ZEC holders voted on the recent NU7 upgrade, their individual voting power was private. Only the final results were revealed. Ledger Wallet can be used to participate in this private voting.

Decentralized by Design

Shielded Zcash operates without a central operator, without a single point of failure, with no need to trust a third party since transactions are verified on-chain, and with censorship resistance built in. 

Through Ledger Wallet™, signer holders can access shielded transactions while keeping private keys on-device.

Auditable Without Exposure 

Shielded doesn’t mean you hide from auditors. You can share read-only access to your transaction history with a tax advisor or compliance officer. They see everything you did. They can’t initiate transactions.
