What is Flare (FLR)?

Flare is a blockchain platform that allows developers to create applications that can interact with other blockchains and the internet. Its EVM-based architecture enables access to high-integrity data in a decentralized manner, opening up new possibilities for monetization.

The network’s native protocols, such as the State Connector and the FTSO, securely connect and deliver data from various off-chain sources, while the Flare Time Series Oracle provides decentralized price and data feeds for dapps. These protocols minimize risk by utilizing independent data providers, incentivizing the secure and trustless use of information from other blockchains and the internet in smart contracts on Flare, leading to a wide range of potential innovative use cases.

The FLR token is used for transactions, fees, and staking in validator nodes on the Flare blockchain. It can also be converted into a WFLR ERC-20 token, which serves multiple purposes such as delegating to data providers on the FTSO or participating in governance. Possessing WFLR does not limit its use in other EVM-compatible dapps and smart contracts on Flare.

History And Key Events In Flare (FLR) Evolution

Flare was founded in 2020 by Hugo Philion, Sean Rowan and Dr Nairi Usher, now CEO, CTO and Chief Scientist, respectively. They met while studying machine learning at University College London, sharing an interest in distributed systems and their potential applications.

The launch of the project was delayed by two years and the Flare network was finally launched in production in January 2022.

For this occasion, the token specific to the FLR protocol was distributed to users via an airdrop. In practice, to obtain this airdrop, it was necessary to hold at least 1 XRP at the time of the snapshot which was made in December 2020.

Eligible users shared 4.28 billion FLR tokens. This airdrop represents 15% of the total FLR token supply. The remaining 85% will be distributed over the next three years.

At the time of its launch on January 9, 2022, the token was trading at around $0.15 per unit on exchange platforms.
