First Firmware Update Coming to the Ledger Nano X

Ledger Nano X Firmware Update

As of today, the Ledger Nano X firmware version 1.2.4-4 is available! It brings some optimizations to the already robust security it boasts, as well as some other additions.

The Ledger Nano X is seeing its first firmware update a year after its release. With firmware version 1.2.4-4, a security enhancement will be included as well as some additional features. The MCU chip will equally get upgraded from version 2.8 to 2.10.

On the 8th of July, we launched firmware version 1.2.4-2 and had it rolled out progressively. We noticed that a small portion (around 1% of those who updated) ran into a technical difficulty. Firmware version 1.2.4-4 fixes this issue and is now available.

Let’s take a closer look at what this new firmware version brings.

Security Enhancements and Further Additions

The largest reason for this firmware update is a patch to a minor vulnerability. Now rest assured that your recovery phrase, private keys and funds are not at risk. The vulnerability targets the MCU chip, while the security of the Ledger Nano X is based on the Secure Element (for storing critical data like your recovery phrase / PIN). Since the Secure Element is not impacted, your funds remain secure – even without performing the firmware update. The firmware update brings an update to the MCU chip to help in mitigating this. This fully patches this vulnerability. Should you prefer to have a more detailed version of this vulnerability and security patch, we recommend checking out this article.

Some further additions include:

  • Added mandatory regulatory information in the device’s settings menu
  • Added cryptographic support for the Stark 256 curve. This will allow the support of Starkware applications.
  • Added cryptographic support for the BLS12-381 curve

Updating Via Desktop

The Ledger Nano X is our first hardware wallet that can connect to smartphones via Bluetooth, while still being able to connect to computers via USB cable. Our goal is to provide the exact same features for the Ledger Nano X, whether you are using a smartphone or computer.

Considering that we wanted to provide these security enhancements to you sooner rather than later, we had to make a tough decision. As such, this firmware update will only be available to you through Ledger Live Desktop. We hope to be able to provide future firmware updates for the Ledger Nano X through our mobile app as well.

To install the latest firmware version, you’ll need to use the latest version of Ledger Live (v2.8.0+). The Ledger Nano X firmware update will be rolled out progressively. If you don’t see it available yet, don’t hesitate to try again at a later point.

Major UX enhancements

We have improved the update flow for the Ledger Nano X. With the Ledger Nano S, users had to disconnect and reconnect their device at least once in the process. This will not be the case for updating your Ledger Nano X.

For another, apps that were installed on your Ledger Nano X prior to the firmware update will be automatically uninstalled and reinstalled. This major UX enhancement will be a huge timesaver to our users, as well as it now being a fully automatic process.

At Ledger, we are committed to providing you with the most secure experience for your crypto assets. Firmware updates such as these contribute to the continuous enhancements of our devices’ security and user experience. Should you require any assistance with updating your Ledger Nano X’s firmware version, we’ve written a dedicated help center article to help you with this.
