RWA Perpetual Futures
What Are RWA Perpetual Futures?
RWA perpetual futures, or RWA perps, are typically onchain perpetual futures contracts whose price tracks an offchain real-world asset. Here, RWA refers to a “Real World Asset” such as gold, an equity, or a bond, whose price is the contract’s benchmark. Most RWA perps are synthetic and cash-settled, providing stablecoin-settled price exposure without granting ownership or requiring custody of the referenced asset.
This distinguishes them from tokenized RWAs, which are issued under legal and custody arrangements linking the token to an underlying asset or claim. While tokenized RWAs typically confer ownership or redemption rights, RWA perps convey neither.
Protocols use oracles to provide reference prices for funding, collateral valuation, and liquidations.
How Do RWA Perps Work?
RWA perps use the same funding rate mechanism as standard crypto perpetuals. That is to say, when the perp trades above its oracle reference, longs pay shorts. When it trades below it, shorts pay longs. This is designed to keep the contract price near its reference index, though divergence can occur during low liquidity, oracle disruption, or extreme conditions.
Leverage is central to RWA perp trading. In this scenario, traders deposit stablecoin margin to control positions larger than their collateral, amplifying both gains and losses. As a result, liquidation risk is a constant factor when it comes to managing any perps positions.
Why Are RWA Perps Growing?
RWA perps trade 24/7, including when equity and commodity markets are closed. Traders can act at any time, though the reference price may be stale during off-hours and reopenings can produce sharp gaps and liquidation risk.
They support long and short positions with leverage, which most tokenized RWA products do not. Because they are synthetic, new markets can often launch more quickly than legally structured tokenized products, though they still require reliable data feeds, liquidity, and risk controls, and may face regulatory constraints.
Key risks of RWA perps include:
- Oracle failure or manipulation causing incorrect liquidations
- Stale prices and gap risk around market closures
- Thin liquidity on newer pairs
- Smart contract vulnerabilities
- Funding costs accumulating over time
- Platform and counterparty risks varying by venue
Regulatory exposure to RWA perps also varies by jurisdiction, since a perpetual referencing shares, commodities, bonds, or currencies may be classified as a regulated derivative in some regions.
