비트코인과 암호화폐의 역사 간단 정리

In 2008, Bitcoin emerged as the first cryptocurrency. A lot has happened since that day – let’s to take a look back at the history of cryptocurrency to understand the important changes it catalyzed.

The History of Bitcoin: From The Start

The idea of having a digital currency is not a new one. Prior to cryptocurrencies, many attempts at creating one have taken place. The main issue most of them were facing, was the double spending problem. A digital asset somehow needs to be usable only once to prevent copying it and effectively counterfeiting it.

암호화폐가 등장하기 10년도 더 전에 컴퓨터공학자 웨이 다이(Wei Dai)가 이러한 개념을 주창했습니다. 1998년, 웨이 다이는 “B-money”를 주제로 한 논문을 발표했습니다. 논문에서 그는 추적할 수 없는 디지털 가명 그룹을 따라 전송할 수 있는 디지털 화폐라는 아이디어를 소개했습니다. 같은 해, 블록체인 선구자 닉 자보(Nick Szabo)가 비트 골드(Bit Gold)라는 이름으로 또 다른 디지털 화폐 발행을 시도했습니다. 비트 골드 역시 탈중앙화된 디지털 화폐를 만드는 작업을 심도 있게 살펴보았습니다. 자보는 기존 금융 시스템 내의 비효율성에 주목해 아이디어를 발전시켰습니다. 예를 들어, 기존 시스템에 따라 동전을 주조하려면 금속이 필요하다는 문제가 있었습니다. 또한, 트랜잭션을 생성하는데 필요한 신뢰의 양을 감소시키고자 디지털 화폐를 연구했습니다. 둘 모두 공식 런칭은 못했으나, 비트코인에 영감의 원천이 되어주었습니다.

The Birth of Bitcoin: The First Cryptocurrency

Satoshi Nakamoto published the white paper called Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System, describing the functionality of the Bitcoin blockchain network. This day in Bitcoin history has carved the path for the events that followed.

Four months later, Satoshi Nakamoto, whose true identity remains a mystery to this day, mined the first block of the Bitcoin network, effectively piloting the blockchain technology. The first mined block is also known as the Genesis Block.

The first recorded purchase of goods was made with Bitcoin when Laszlo Hanyecz bought two pizzas for 10,000 BTC. This day is still commemorated to date as the Bitcoin Pizza Day. At Ledger, we celebrated this with a limited edition Ledger Nano S.

How The Crypto Market Made History

비트코인이 최초의 암호화폐로 탄생한 이후, 비트코인을 거래하기 위해 솔루션을 찾아야 했습니다. 2010년 3월, 최초의 암호화폐 거래소가 bitcoinmarket.com이라는 이름으로 등장했습니다(현재는 없어졌습니다). 그 해 7월에는 Mt.Gox도 서비스를 시작했습니다.

2011년 이후, 2013년 2월에 비트코인은 미국 달러와 동일한 가치를 지니게 되었습니다. 이 한 해 동안은 암호화폐 경쟁자도 다양하게 생겨났습니다. 2013년 5월 암호화폐 시장에는 라이트코인을 포함하여 10종의 디지털 자산이 등장했습니다. 8월에는 주요 암호화폐로 꼽히는 XRP(리플)이 탄생했습니다.

The Mt.Gox Disaster

비트코인의 가치가 커지자, 이후 최초의 해킹 사례도 발생했습니다. 2011년 6월, Mt. Gox는 처음으로 해킹을 당했습니다. 2,000 BTC를 도난당했는데, 그 가치는 당시 약 30,000달러에 달했습니다.

Mt.Gox는 2013년 최대 규모의 암호화폐 거래소가 되었으며, 전성기에는 비트코인 트랜잭션 중 70%를 처리했습니다.

Unfortunately, in 2014, Mt.Gox became the first major cryptocurrency exchange hack, having 850,000 BTC stolen from it. This is the largest theft of BTC in Bitcoin history, which was valued at $460,000,000 at the time (current date value around  $9,5 billion).

After this unprecedented situation, the Bitcoin price plummeted by 50% and did not recover to its initial value till late 2016. Cryptocurrency exchange hacks have remained ever-present since, though rarely of Mt.Gox’s caliber.

Ethereum and the Introduction of Tokens and Blockchain Apps

On July 30th 2015, The Ethereum network was launched. Currently the second crypto asset in terms of market capitalization, it brought smart contracts and eventually decentralized finance to the cryptocurrency world. These allow the Ethereum blockchain to run an entire ecosystem on its blockchain while also hosting its own native currency: Ether (ETH). The smallest unit of Ether is also known as a Wei (0.000,000,000,000,000,001 ETH).

Cryptocurrencies that don’t have their own dedicated blockchain, but use the blockchain of another crypto asset are known as tokens. There are now several tokens on the Ethereum network, but simple crypto tokens are called ERC-20 tokens. The first-ever ERC token was launched back in 2015. That was the crypto asset known as Augur. Since that day, a plethora of tokens have been created on the Ethereum blockchain. There are currently more than 200,000 ERC tokens, which means that there is a huge cryptocurrency ecosystem running on a single blockchain.

The History of Cryptocurrencies Is Ongoing

The cryptocurrency world has not stood still since. Prices reached an all-time high in the bitcoin history in January 2018 and many new crypto assets have joined since, including EOS (July 2017), Tron (September 2017) and Cardano (October 2017). The cryptocurrency market currently hosts over 2000 digital currencies and is still expanding.
