Building Trust in Crypto

with

Ilya Vulkov & Sebastian Badault
Co-founder & CEO @ YouHodler & EVP of Enterprise @ Ledger

Dec 19, 2025

On this episode of The Ledger Podcast, Ilya Vulkov, Co-founder and CEO of YouHodler and board member of the Switzerland Crypto Valley Association, joins Ledger’s EVP of Enterprise Sebastian Badault to get into what it actually takes to build a trusted platform in the digital asset space.

It features YouHodler’s approach to blending centralized financial services with the security of self-custody, what regulated crypto really costs to build, and why the biggest opportunity in crypto isn’t blowing up traditional finance, but it’s improving on it.

“You’re not just reinventing the wheel. You’re taking best practices from a bigger market, a traditional market, and you just put it onchain and on such a beautiful hardware device.” – Ilya Vulkov

Key Highlights:

Evolution, Not Revolution: Separating Survivors from Casualties

Ilya’s core approach is deceptively simple: crypto isn’t replacing the traditional financial system, it’s refining it. He draws a direct line between centuries-old banking practices and modern Web3 governance.

Take multi-signature transaction approvals, for example; that’s not a crypto invention. Traditional banks have required at least two authorized signatories on significant transactions for hundreds of years. What Ledger Enterprise provides, in his view, is the same logic, implemented in a more modern, more convenient, and more secure way.

His go-to analogy wasn’t another crypto project, but Uber. Introduced as a concept for ride-sharing between private individuals, it eventually became something far larger and more structured. The underlying technology changed the world even as the original vision got adopted. Crypto, he argues, is following the same arc. The businesses that grasped that early on are still around. The ones that didn’t, largely aren’t.

The Brutal Truth About Building a Regulated Business

Building a regulated business is, in a word, hard work, and Ilya isn’t shy about saying so, less as a complaint than as a warning to anyone weighing the move. From day one, YouHodler made a deliberate bet on regulation, operating from the conviction that it was an inevitable destination for the whole industry. That bet has paid off, but the cost was real: significant headcount, considerable budget, and an ongoing battle with bureaucracy, especially in Europe as sweeping new regulatory frameworks like MiCA come into force.

His advice to anyone building in the space today: be prepared to invest heavily, and expect those demands to grow. The companies that operated in what he calls the “wild, wild west” of crypto are, for the most part, no longer around.

When Stablecoins Replace SWIFT

One of the more striking growth stories Ilya shares is how quickly small and medium-sized businesses doing international trade have taken to YouHodler’s platform. The example he keeps returning to: a Spanish company buying goods from Argentina. Previously, settling that via SWIFT meant waiting up to five business days and paying significant fees. On YouHodler’s hybrid platform, the same company converts euros to stablecoins in seconds, sends value across the world, and has the recipient off-ramp to local currency instantly, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The “wow” moment, Ilya explains, is when a business owner feels the difference between days and milliseconds for the first time. YouHodler also enables settlement via Bitcoin over the Lightning Network in partnership with Lightspark, adding another rail for those who need it. When something is faster, cheaper, and easier, Ilya says, adoption follows.

The Ledger Partnership: Why “Secured by Ledger Enterprise” Is a Public Statement

Security partnerships are usually a footnote buried in a whitepaper. YouHodler puts theirs on the homepage. The relationship with Ledger Enterprise is a signal to the kind of customers who already own a Ledger device themselves. When someone who trusts their personal signer to secure their own assets discovers that the institutional platform they’re using is built on the same infrastructure, the trust carries over.

The partnership creates a feedback loop; Ledger Wallet™  users can connect their signer directly to YouHodler to access lending, trading, and banking services, while Ledger Enterprise underpins the institutional custody layer that makes those services safe to offer at scale. For Ilya, that interconnection reflects a broader truth about how this market moves: through partnerships, not despite them.

Hardware Security and the Hybrid Future: Meeting Every User Where They Are

Ilya frames the next phase of adoption as a human problem as much as a technical one. Some people want full control over their own keys. Others want the peace of mind of a trusted institution managing assets on their behalf. Both preferences are valid, and both need to be served well.

Ledger’s two-sided approach of retail hardware and software for the self-sovereign user and Ledger Enterprise for institutions and platforms like YouHodler is built around that reality. Ilya points to Ledger Stax as a marker of where the industry needs to go. Specifically, hardware that doesn’t ask users to trade security for usability.

Sebastian adds the technical reason that matters most. The direct connection between the Secure Element chip and the signer’s screen isn’t a design aesthetic; it eliminates the attack vectors present in phones and computers. The screen, as Sebastian puts it, cannot lie to you.

In five years, Ilya notes that most users won’t even know their transactions are settling onchain. The blockchain will just be infrastructure; invisible, reliable, and in the background. That, he says, is when you’ll know mass adoption has actually arrived.
