On-Ramping
What Is On-Ramping?
In the context of crypto, on-ramping is simply the conversion of fiat money into digital assets.
The most common on-ramp is a centralized exchange (CEX). These platforms accept credit or debit card payments in exchange for cryptocurrency, and typically require identity verification through a Know Your Customer (KYC) process before granting full access. This means purchases are often linked to a real-world identity, even though blockchains themselves are typically pseudonymous.
Alternative on-ramps include decentralized exchanges that integrate third-party buying services such as MoonPay or Transak, and NFT marketplaces that accept card payments. Bitcoin ATMs also exist as an option, though verification requirements, fees, and purchase limits vary by operator and jurisdiction.
What Happens to Your Crypto After On-Ramping?
Where your newly purchased crypto ends up depends on which on-ramp you use. On a centralized exchange, assets are held in the platform’s custodial wallet, meaning the exchange controls the private keys, not you. To take full ownership, you need to transfer your assets to a non-custodial wallet.
On-ramps that use third-party buying integrations on decentralized platforms send purchased crypto directly to your own wallet, giving you full control of your assets from the moment you buy. Ledger Wallet™ supports on-ramping through partners including MoonPay, Coinify, and Transak, with purchased assets going directly to your Ledger signer.

On-Ramping vs. Off-Ramping
On-ramping and off-ramping are not perfectly symmetrical processes. Converting fiat to crypto is generally straightforward via exchanges or buying integrations. Converting it back, or off-ramping, requires finding an exchange that supports your chosen fiat currency and can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to settle. Crypto debit cards, including the Ledger CL Card, offer a faster alternative by converting crypto to fiat at the point of purchase.
