Ticker Meaning

Jul 11, 2023 | Updated Jul 19, 2023
A ticker in crypto is a symbol with a unique combination of letters to help identify a particular cryptocurrency.

What is a Ticker in Crypto?

If you’ve ever gone to a baseball game, you may have noticed the electronic scoreboard that displays the current score, inning, and other important information. One of the features of the scoreboard is a section that displays the ticker symbols for each team, typically consisting of three letters. For example, the ticker symbol for the New York Yankees is NYY, while the symbol for the Los Angeles Dodgers is LAD. These ticker symbols are used to uniquely identify each team and make it easier for fans to follow the game and keep track of their favorite teams.

Like airports and stocks, every cryptocurrency has a unique ticker symbol. Most of the time, cryptocurrency ticker symbols consist of three letters. For example, the ticker symbol of Bitcoin is BTC, and Ethereum is ETH. But ticker symbols can be four letters or even 5 to 6 letters like DOGE for Dogecoin and MATIC for Polygon.

A crypto ticker symbol can help you identify and differentiate a crypto token from other tokens on the trading chart.
