KEY TAKEAWAYS:
— Ledger Recovery Key is a PIN-protected private backup card that stores your 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase in a Secure Element chip, expanding the range of secure recovery options.

— Through NFC technology and secure authentication, Ledger Recovery Key enables effortless backup and restoration with just a few taps on your secure touchscreen device.

— While this doesn’t replace your recovery sheet, it provides an alternative secure backup option tailored to your personal security strategy.

For the 600 million people who own crypto today, the biggest barrier to secure self-custody isn’t technology—it’s trust in themselves. The idea of personally safeguarding a 24-word Recovery Phrase can be daunting, especially when the most common solution—a handwritten recovery sheet—comes with the real risks of loss, damage, theft, or human error.

Ledger Recovery Key is a private backup card designed to ease the burden of managing your 24-word Recovery Phrase. Ledger Recovery Key is a complement to your standard recovery sheet, rather than a replacement. It’s a convenient and secure offline backup, helping more users embrace self-custody with confidence and peace of mind, without ever compromising on security.

In this article, Ledger Academy breaks down everything you need to know about Ledger Recover Key, how it works, and how it helps you safeguard your Secret Recovery Phrase.

The Importance of Your 24-Word Secret Recovery Phrase

Your crypto wallet doesn’t store digital assets—those remain on the blockchain. Instead, your wallet manages the private keys that control assets tied to specific blockchain addresses. These private keys enable you to sign transactions, while the Secure Element safeguards them against hackers.

The BIP-39 standard converts private keys into a 24-word mnemonic phrase (Secret Recovery/Seed Phrase), from which infinite accounts with their own private keys can be derived. This made complex cryptography human-readable, allowing wallet recovery anytime, anywhere.

However, these 24 words also create a single point of failure. Lose or share them, and your assets are gone. Store them online, and they could be stolen. There’s no reset button or customer support—this is the tradeoff of self-custody.

Ledger Recovery Key Explained

Ledger Recovery Key is a PIN-protected physical backup card that stores your Secret Recovery Phrase in a Secure Element chip. The ease of use of this durable 5cm square device offers a game-changing solution designed to ease the emotional burden and practical challenges of self-custody, empowering more users to embrace true digital ownership without ever compromising on security.

Secure Element Technology

Ledger Recovery Key features the same Secure Element chip technology used in Ledger devices. This chip safeguards sensitive data and performs secure operations within a trusted environment, offering the same level of security as credit cards and biometric passports.

PIN Protection

Access to your Ledger Recovery Key is protected by a user-defined, 4-8 digit PIN code. Similar to your Ledger Hardware Wallet, entering the wrong PIN more than three times will automatically wipe the device, ensuring your backup remains secure even if it falls into the wrong hands.

Secure Channel Communication

Ledger Recovery Key and your Ledger device engage in mutual authentication. Their communication is secured through a cryptographic protocol that ensures both confidentiality and authenticity in data transfer.

Secure Display & User Verification

Your Ledger device’s operating system verifies the authenticity of the Recovery Key and ensures that all interactions requiring confirmation are consistently presented on your secure touchscreen. This process guarantees that you can visually verify the authenticity of the Recovery Key in use.

For example, if the Secret Recovery Phrase stored on the Recovery Key doesn’t match the one on your current Ledger device, a warning screen will alert you. This can be particularly useful for those managing multiple backup solutions as part of their personal security setup.

What’s more, all interactions with the Ledger Recovery Key are initiated and confirmed via the secure screen of your Ledger device, ensuring the backup and restoration processes are quick, easy, and secure.

Key Advantages of Ledger Recovery Key

With its innovative design, Ledger Recovery Key addresses some of the key disadvantages of standard recovery sheets, making it perfectly suited as an additional backup, but not a replacement.

Simple, Memorable PIN

Instead of relying on 24 words, Ledger Recovery Key uses a 4-8 digit PIN—something most people are comfortable remembering. Your physical recovery sheet can remain your final fallback for ultimate peace of mind. For security, the contents of a Ledger Recovery Key will be wiped after three wrong PIN attempts, which is why it is essential to retain a written record of your 24 words as an ultimate backup.

This PIN protection also makes it much harder to compromise your SRP through social engineering, so it is better suited than a paper recovery sheet as your readily accessible backup method.

Built for seamless and secure everyday use

Thanks to its compact form factor and full integration into the Ledger ecosystem, Ledger Recovery Key is built for everyday peace of mind. Whether you’re traveling, organizing backups, or managing multiple devices, you can easily restore your wallet whenever you need, in just a few taps with your secure touchscreen Ledger device.

More Ways to Back Up, Your Way

Every user’s approach to security is different, and research shows that backup preferences vary widely. As part of an ongoing commitment to advancing secure self-custody, Ledger provides a range of backup solutions to help protect your 24 words and keep you in firm control of your assets, including paper recovery sheets, metal backups, and Ledger Recover. Ledger Recovery Key expands the range of secure options available, empowering you to choose the setup that works best for your personal security strategy.

Ledger Recovery Solutions

Why Ledger Recovery Key Beats Seedless Solutions

Some wallets attempt to simplify self-custody by eliminating seed phrases entirely. These “seedless” wallets lock private keys inside devices and offer recovery through fixed NFC cards or proprietary methods.

While this appears easier, seedless wallets create critical limitations on self-custody. They typically provide only two or three recovery cards with no ability to create additional backups or rotate security methods. Lose these cards, and you lose access permanently.

Most importantly, seedless solutions remove your ability to recover your account using any BIP39-compatible wallet. You’re locked into proprietary recovery flows that could strand you if the vendor changes direction or shuts down. This isn’t decentralization—it’s dependency disguised as convenience.

Ledger Recovery Key takes a fundamentally different approach. Rather than removing responsibility, it makes responsibility more manageable while preserving what matters most: your sovereignty. You maintain full control of your 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase, can recover using any compatible wallet worldwide, and aren’t locked into closed systems.

Open Source and Transparency

The decentralized world is trustless by design. At Ledger, we share that ethos, which is why we embrace an open-source approach wherever possible. After all, you shouldn’t have to take our word for it when it comes to security.

What’s Open Source

The majority of Ledger’s code can be reviewed, including:

Recovery Key’s design—combining a secure chip with an operating system—enables us to make the application running the business logic openly verifiable with:

  • Secure data transfers
  • Secure storage mechanisms
  • Cryptographic computations

You can review the code in our GitHub repository. The Secure Element within the Recovery Key ensures device and operating system authenticity, both having passed rigorous Common Criteria EAL6+ security certification. The EAL, or Evaluation Assurance level, is a global security standard certifying that a product has met a specific level of security testing, from EAL 1 (basic) to EAL 7 (rigorous).

Why Some Components Remain Closed

Some parts of Ledger OS interact directly with Secure Elements, which use proprietary IP from chip manufacturers to power hardware-level protections like countermeasures against side-channel and fault attacks. Disclosing this code would both expose critical intellectual property and weaken the very protections that make Secure Elements effective.

It’s also important to note that while open-source software is critical, it isn’t a silver bullet for security. On non-secure chips, even fully open systems remain vulnerable to physical attacks. Ledger chooses the most secure path: Secure Elements combined with open-source components, where transparency matters most.

Security should be verifiable, but it should never be compromised.

Pricing and Availability

Moving forward, every secure touchscreen Ledger device will ship with a Ledger Recovery Key in the box at no additional charge. For users wanting additional Recovery Keys, they’re available on Ledger.com for $39, or you can purchase a three-pack for $99—perfect for creating multiple secure backups or managing different wallets.

For customers who already own a Ledger Stax or Ledger Flex, we’re offering you a complimentary Ledger Recovery Key until August 30th. Head to this claim page to understand how the offer works. Shipping fees will apply.
